Planetwatch, a French startup that decentralizes and promotes environmental monitoring, announced the launch of its PLANETS utility token on the 4th. June will be listed on the Bitfinex exchange. PLANETS is Algorand’s first standard asset (without stablecoins) listed on a major international exchange. Claudio Parrinello, CEO of PlanetWatch, stated: This is an important step for PlanetWatch. Less than 18 months after our founding, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, we were able to demonstrate that our smart city-as-a-service solution, based on the use of community sensors and public air quality data, can quickly and cost-effectively deliver enterprise-level data. PlanetWatch revolutionizes the way we measure air quality with Algorand’s blockchain, IoT-enabled sensors and artificial intelligence-based data analytics. PlanetWatch encourages citizens to install air quality sensors and receive a symbolic reward for data flows. Sean Lee, chief executive of the Algorand Foundation, said: We are pleased to announce that Bitfinex supports the PLANETS token. The PlanetWatch team has shown remarkable vision and innovation in developing the aaS smart city concept and choosing the sustainable, carbon-neutral blockchain network Algorand to build its useful token ecosystem. We look forward to the world discovering the incredible potential of crowd-sourced air quality monitoring and the PLANETS token. PlanetWatch pays special attention to air pollution because it causes more than 7 million deaths per year (source: WHO). Moreover, recent studies have shown an association between long-term exposure to air pollution and increased mortality from COVID-19 infections, as well as a significant risk of infection from indoor aerosols, as air quality may be a proxy for infection risk. PlanetWatch is actively supported by prestigious partners such as Algorand, the Algorand Foundation and CERN, the world’s leading laboratory for physics research, where the web was born. As a supplier of environmental data, PlanetWatch naturally chose to partner with Algorand. Algorand offers a highly scalable, decentralized and secure blockchain that is also one of the greenest in terms of energy consumption. As for CERN, PlanetWatch is the only company in the global blockchain ecosystem that is an official spin-off of CERN. The PlanetWatch network is growing very quickly. It currently has about 700 sensors, mainly in Europe and the United States. Based on the current installation schedule, the milestone of 1,000 collectors will be reached within a few weeks.
